That’s Wassup! Monique Wins Oscar!
Monique took home the Oscar last night for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ for her role in “Precious.” “Precious” has been whippin’ ass in the movie industry and it deserves to becuz it’s a good fuckin’ movie. Much love to Tyler Perry and Oprah for funding a movie that was outside of Hollywood’s standards.
Congrats to Monique…my only question is: Why was Mo’ only the 5th African American woman to win an Oscar tho? I’m just sayin’ this some bullshit.
First was Hatti McDaniel 71 years ago! Then it took the Academy a whole ‘notha 52 years to give respect to a Black actress when Whoopi won in 1990. The fuck wrong wit’ this picture? What about Diane Carrol, Diana Ross was a fool in “Mahogony, Lady Sings The Blues, The Wiz,” Cicely Tyson was always a beast on screen, Angela Basset?!!
C’mon now, the list goes on and on…but I guess now it’s beginning to get too hard for the Academy to keep acting like we don’t exist. We spend too much money on entertainment and other bullshit for them to keep ignoring us.
Don’t get me wrong, in my opinion the shit is going to be racist for a long time but the Academy just has to continue to think of more creative ways to keep Black folk outta the competition. Major production houses refusing to fund movies that aren’t within their lil’ typical ass “black movie box” is dead now because Black people (i.e. Oprah and Tyler Perry) are puttin’ up our own gotdamn money to release to the public…now what?!!
I’m done venting, check out the time line and acceptance speeches of all the Black female Oscar winners below and catch up on ya’ history. Peace. Golden Trophy
2010: Monique wins Oscar for “Best Supporting Actress”
Now let’s work our way backwards…
1939: This is where it started: Hattie McDaniel wins Oscar for “Best Supporting Actress” in 1939…This is a must watch.
1991: Whoopi won the gold trophy for “Best Supporting Actress” in “Ghost”
2001: Halle Berry did the damn thang when she was the 1st Black woman to win for “Best Actress” in “Monster’s Ball”
2006: And Jennifer Hudson got her one for her supporting role in “Dream Girls”
